Previous vs. NEW metoject® PEN:

Our previous MTX PEN compared to our simplified autoinjector

We at medac have further optimised our autoinjector, to improve the quality of life of patients who have been prescribed a MTX PEN.

  • Simplified autoinjector without release button: to start the injection, you only need to press our new MTX PEN all the way down.
  • The acoustic signal at the beginning of the self-injection is supplemented by a further signal which indicates a completed injection.
  • Successful injection is easy to verify: after complete administration, a blue plunger rod appears in the inspection window.
  • Needle always hidden - helpful for patients with a fear of needles or syringes
  • The angular shape of our new metoject® PEN can be gripped easily and prevents rolling away.

Trusted. Tailored. Ergonomic.

Despite all the innovations, patients do not have to do without they are familiar with from their previous metoject® PEN from medac: the small injection volume and the fast injection within 5 seconds (depending on dosage).

Important to know:

In order to ensure continuity of our MTX medicines, both the previous and the new metoject® PEN will be available for a while. Therefore, you might receive one or the other upon presentation of the prescription. It will depend on the stocks of the individual pharmacy when the new autoinjector will be sold. After the transition period only the new metoject® PEN will be available. We expect the transition period to last only a few months.

FAQ List

What are the differences between the previous and new metoject® PEN?

In comparison to the previous PEN, the new PEN is simplified:

Our new metoject® / metex® PEN is a simplified autoinjector:

Step1: Remove the cap of your PEN Step 2: Position your PEN Step 3: Start the subcutaneous self-injection by pushing down the PEN Step 4: Hold the autoinjector in place to complete injection Step 5: Finishing the subcutaneous self-injection

The new metoject® / metex® PEN will provide an audible signal at the start and the end of the injection as well as a blue indicator in the viewing window to control a completed injection.

  • For patients with a fear of needles: The needle of our new methotrexate autoinjector is always hidden - before and after the subcutaneous injection.
  • The new PEN offers a larger label for easy identification of the correct dose.
  • Our new MTX PEN has an angular shape that can be well-gripped and may prevent the methotrexate autoinjector from rolling when placed on a flat surface.
* For a detailed guide on how to use the new pen please check the following guide.

Our new MTX PEN also retains some of the characteristics of the previous one:

  • Due to the concentration, the injection volume is small.
  • It has to be positioned against the skin for at most 5 seconds to complete the subcutaneous injection.
  • It is available in up to 10 dosages* for a flexible choice of the required MTX dose. The colour code also remains unchanged for each dose.
* Available doses may vary depending on the country

When will the new metoject® PEN be available?

The new PEN will be available starting January 2024 in the first region and then subsequently be rolled out in further regions. For a limited time after launch, both PEN models will be available and therefore patients might receive one or the other upon presentation of the prescription.

Will the new metoject® PEN be readily available in all pharmacies?

For a limited time after launch, both PEN models will be available and therefore patients might receive one or the other upon presentation of the prescription. It will depend on the stocks of the individual pharmacy when the new PEN will be sold. After the transition period only the new PEN will be available. We expect the transition period to last for about 3 months.

Is it still possible to prescribe the previous metoject® PEN?

For a limited time after launch, both PEN models will be available and therefore patients might receive one or the other upon presentation of the prescription. After the transition period the old PEN will not be available anymore.

How long will the previous metoject® PEN be available?

For a limited time, both PEN models will be available and therefore patients might receive one or the other upon presentation of the prescription. After the launch of the new PEN, individual pharmacies might sell the previous PEN until their stocks are depleted. However, after all stocks of the previous PEN are sold, only the new PEN will be available. We expect the transition period the last for about 3 months.

Is the previous PEN still available in other regions?

The new PEN will not be available in all countries at the same time. But the new PEN will globally replace the previous PEN and in the future only the new PEN will be available.
